The Social Dilemma

Post by seoofficial2723 »

A mirror of today's society, seen as a dangerous reality, or an attempt at dialogue to find a concrete and feasible solution?
The docu-film produced by Netflix and directed by Jeff Orlowski , an American director known above all for directing and producing the Emmy-winning documentaries Chasing Ice and Chasing Coral, analyses from different points of view the impact on everyday life of the advent and diffusion of social networks and delves into the social and economic consequences that this entails .

Orlowksi asks a question that remains in the background throughout the documentary, namely: how has the approach to social and individual life changed following the spread of social networks, especially among the younger generation?

The documentary opens with the presentation of several specialists in the technology sector, including Tristan Harris and Tim Kendall, who trained in and have in turn shaped the reality of the Big in the field such as FB, IG, Google, YT, Twitter, Firefox, Mozilla, Pinterest: the majority of the experts openly declare that they have decided to no longer work for these companies for various reasons, among which however the ethical dilemma reigns supreme.

First of all, the experts illustrate the country email list primordial need of man, as a social animal, to feel part of a community and to see this status of belonging concretely recognized.

From here, therefore, one of the noblest matrices that contributed, in the embryonic phase, to the birth of social media is exposed: the drastic reduction of space-time boundaries. In this way, it has contributed to eliminating elements that hinder the reunion of past affections, to the much more problematic first meetings and to the impossibility of connecting working realities that are difficult to communicate with each other. In fact, Ben, a boy belonging to the typical American family analyzed in the video, seems to be initially almost encouraged by Facebook to approach the girl he has a crush on.

However, the other side of a coin that seems to shine with its own light is soon revealed: an excessive and immoderate use of such applications causes serious damage to the psycho-physical balance of the user, leading him in the most extreme cases to a state of real dependence and to various related disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder, stress, etc.

The grotesque aspect, however, appears when the experts in the sector explicitly declare that such abuse does not depend solely on the possible emotional or social fragilities of the individual user, but is a direct and desired result of the creative matrix, of the algorithm itself at the base of the social application. The algorithm has been specifically programmed in order to grow exponentially to infinity, so as to accompany the user by the hand into a World from which they do not want him to leave, in order to continue to guarantee a perennial exposure and a perpetual attention to advertising banners.
