Carles Acero, General Manager of Claranet Spain, argues that the report should place special emphasis on Cloud providers guaranteeing their clients that their data is being hosted in the country of their choice. For Acero, the commitment of these actors regarding the country of data hosting is essential to increase confidence in Cloud technology.
“Data protection laws vary around the world, and list of belize consumer email even within European countries. It is therefore important that data is hosted in the client’s country, where they can be aware of the current regulations at all times,” says Acero. “We hope that the European Commission will encourage cloud service providers to use data centres in the country in which they operate, so that their clients know the location of their data at all times.”
Another issue facing the Cloud industry is data sovereignty. This is one of the main concerns users have about Cloud services. Claranet recently surveyed 300 IT Managers about the barriers they face when adopting Cloud and the results showed that almost half of them do not know where their data is hosted or what their legal jurisdiction is. Therefore, it is important for Service Providers to emphasize data sovereignty and guarantee their clients the hosting of their data in local Data Centers.

“At Claranet we believe that an important way to generate trust and transparency for all clients is for Managed Service Providers to always detail where their data is stored. We believe that it is an example of good practice to promote the commitment to host the Data Centers in the country chosen by the client,” says the General Manager of Claranet Spain. “For this reason, at Claranet we have a principle called “always in country” that guarantees that, whatever the countries in which we decide to carry out the deployment, local regulations will always be complied with and the data will not leave the country without prior written consent from the client.
